Title

Aerial View of Atlantic Square

Description

In August 1919 the first brick buildings erected on the east side of Atlantic Square fronting on Atlantic Street were standing. The Quintard Building erected in 1861 is at left, with the tall quasi-triangular Whitney Building completed in 1891, looming behind. Across Canal Street the low gabled frame building dating to mid-nineteenth century, was once the home of Balcom’s Photograph Gallery, Holly’s Hardware Store, James Horan’s Plumbing Shop and later the Conroy Brothers’ Saloon. To the right is the First National Bank Building erected in 1873, The Ayres Building 1884, the Lyman Hoyt Building 1884, the third home of The C.O. Miller Building now occupied by Sarner’s Clothing Store. At the apex of Canal and Stage Streets, top center of the picture we see the old blacksmith shop established there in 1881 by James Burnes Sr. In the upper right hand corner are buildings and grounds of the Stamford Foundry.
