OF TOMORROW

After more than three years of serious study the Boards of Directors of the
YMCA AND YWCA Stamford Young Men's Christian Association and the Stamford Young
OF TOMORROW
Women's Christian Association are preparing for a joint capital fund campaign for $1,000,000 to be launched in the early part of 1956.
The purpose is to provide funds for urgently needed new building facilities
for boys, girls and young adults, as well as rehabilitation and modernization
of existing buildings.
·
In these plans the YMCA and YWCA have the active cooperation of community leaders, the Stamford Community Chest and the Stamford Community Council of which the YMCA and YWCA are member organizations.
The Chest has approved this united campaign and also has helped to
establish the dates.
Detailed plans for this money raising effort will be worked out during the
coming year under the auspices of a committee representing both organizations. A volunteer soliciting organization will be built and effort expended
toward establishing community understanding of the work and needs.
DIVIDENDS
FOR STAMFORD
Stamford receives dividends op its investment in these youth programs by
enabling its young people to become better citizens. However, there are
hundreds of boys and girls and young adults who throng to the YMCA and
YWCA who cannot be served adequately because of lack of space and
equipment. Now, more than ever before, youth guidance is needed. The
YMCA and YWCA know how to work with youth; they have a proved record
of service to all age levels, all races, and all religious faiths. The YMCA and
YWCA, non-denominational and open to all, help to unite a community, to
bring it social stability, to make it a better place in which to live.
THE STAMFORD
YOUNG WOMEN'S
CHRISTIAN
ASSOCIATION
In the Stamford area, membership grew from a handful in 1927, the year
the Young Women's Christian Association was established, to 5200 in 1954.
Today the membership represents many nationalities and denominations.
The present building, the gift of the late Mrs. C. 0. Miller, was errected in
1930.
For a number of years the YWCA has realized that its program was expanding beyond the capacity of its building. Club rooms have been converted into
dormitory rooms, curtailing the number of clubs and groups that could
assemble there. Many evenings of each week find every available inch of
space in full use ... youth groups meeting in the kitchen ... interest groups
in small offices.
APPLICANTS
TURNED AWAY
Hundreds of applicants each year at the residence have had to be turned
away, although many were assisted through the YWCA Rooms Registry
Service in obtaining rooms in the community.
The Board of Directors of the YWCA recognizes that the population of the
area is expanding rapidly and that the next decade will bring a tremendous
increase. Plans have been made, after careful consideration and consultation.
It is estimated that $400,000 will be needed to provide facilities and adequate space for the program which the Association must carry on toward a
· more acceptable fulfillment of community needs.
The proposed building plans provide for additional club rooms, 30 new
residence rooms, a lounge and kitchen for exclusive use of residents, a
recreation room, and an all purpose room for lectures, dances, concerts,
dance recitals and large meetings, with a capacity of 350. Also proposed is
adequate office space for the staff, expanded health education facilities,
and greatly needed storage space.
These additions will add to the year-around activities, and will open the
doors of the YWCA to hundreds more than can be accommodated now.
THE STAMFORD
YOUNG MEN'S
CHRISTIAN
ASSOCIATION
Organized in 1868, a few years after the first YMCA was established in this
country, the Stamford YMCA for 87 years has been extending a "steadying
hand" to boys and young men.
The work has grown through these years until today it has the largest
membership, the strongest lay support, and the greatest participation in
activities in its history.
Members of the YMCA know that the swimming pool is actually the smallest
in New En land. It has lon been inade uate although used by thousands
of men and boys. Dating back tO 1908, it is not only too smalf, but o bso ete-~
in many other ways. A new pool is proposed, large enough, conforming to
modem standards, and fitting into the needs of present and future Stamford
youth.
While it has grown tremendously in service to the community, it has not
been possible for the YMCA to keep pace with demands on its physical
facilities. Today, it tries to serve more than 7,000 with a building erected in
1908 to take care of 2,400. This vast and all-important work with boys is
carried on in spite of extreme limitations of space and outmoded club rooms
and equipment. Residence rooms need modernization. The Health and
Physical Education department, ravaged by time and intensive use over the
years, requires enlargement and rehabilitation.

Architects and committees state that $600,000 is required for new equipment
and facilities. This amount will make possible modern "tools" ... and create
surroundings that will add to the extensive program of the Association . . .
besides putting Stamford on a par with other Connecticut communities as
far as YMCA service is concerned.
Specifically established will be a new boys' department with adequate club
rooms, craft shop, assembly room and equipment, an enlarged health and
physical education department, special exercise and weight-lifting rooms,
modern swimming pool, and additional dormitory rooms.
Planned also is rehabilitation of vital portions of the mechanical plant which
have long been in need of replacement and renovation.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The year of 1955 was one of contrasts in the
Stamford YMCA. The exciting success of our
first United Fund campaign promises to stabilize
our financial planning for the future-surely a
most encouraging highlight of the year.
An apparent calamity in December was turned
into a blessing. The 46-year-old water main burst
and flooded the boys' lobby. But with splendid
cooperation from all sides our program contin·
ued with relatively minor disruption. A splendid
example of what can he done to rehabilitate our
present building is shown hy the renovation and
modernization job we were able to do on the
boys' lobby.
Another highlight, of which we are proud, is
the C. Russell Waterbury Memorial Room, hon·
oring a man whose devotion to his community
and the Stamford YMCA was outstandingly
apparent during his lifetime. The conference
room dedicated to his memory presents another
startling example of how well we can use the
funds we are shortly going to request from the
community. This room is a thing of beauty and
modernity in the center of our archaic men's
division area.
Perhaps the largest highlight of the year was
the result of the joint YM-YWCA planning com·
mittee in recommending the April campaign for
$1,000,000. We are glad to announce that this
campaign is taking shape satisfactorily. Today's
youth is most certainly the nation's hope for
tomorrow. This fund raising effort to provide
more and finer leadership training through the
YMCA and the YWCA must he the paramount
concern of every citizen of the community.
Members and friends of the two associations
will, of course, he the spearhead of this program.
Your Board of Directors and the Campaign
organization, confident of your ready support,
look forward to the success of this drive and
the future of our organization with confidence
and conviction.

BEQUESTS
In 1955 the YMCA gratefully acknowledged the
following bequests:
One quarter of the i·esidue of the estate
of Miss Florence F. Randolph which has
amounted to $51,250 as of December 31,
1955.
$500 from the estate of Agusta lrrgang.
We urge our friends to remember the YMCA in
their wills. A suggested form of bequest for the
general purposes of the Association is:
BEQUEST FORM
I give and bequeath to the Young Men's Christian Association of Stamford, Connecticut, the
sum of $ ...................... .. .. .. .... , the principal income
therefrom to he used for the general purposes
of said Young Men's Christian Association of
Stamford.

THE GENERAL SECRETARY'S REPORT
From an operations point of view the replacement of four men, who left during the year,
holds first place in this report. Clayton W. Cook,
retired, after IO years of work with us. Louis T.
Choquette became associate general secretary of
the Red Bank, N. J ., "Y" and Carl Schroeder
went to Elizabeth, N. J., as boys' secretary. Fred
Gernsheck left to take a teaching position in
Middletown, N. J. We were all greatly shocked
by Carl's untimely death in June of this year
while on his new job.
We employed David M. Boyd as city-wide
boys' secretary on June 1. He subsequently assumed the Darien branch secretaryship as well.
Walter S. Umherfield joined us on September l
as senior physical and industrial secretary and
added John P. Gawlak as his assistant.
In October, Alfred Sette Jr. came on the staff
as assistant boys' secretary.
Conrad Hoaglund took over the membership
and adult program responsibility in September.
Regretfully, I report that our World Service
support fell off by more than $100 during 1955.
This program is a vital part of our Christian
heritage and our efforts must be doubled in the
coming year.
Two outstanding financial figures must be
brought before you. The first is the increase in
our endowments funds which, through the addition of two bequests, totaling $51,750, has
brought our funds up to $209,343.25. The eam·
ings from the endowment funds go into our
annual operating account and help to reduce
the amount we would request from the United
Fund. The second figure is our gross income
which has been climbing steadily the past five
years from $63,000 in 1951 to $93,118 in 1955.
This indicates a healthy interest in the work of
our Association especially as it relates to boys.
I must call your attention to the 456 volunteer
members who served on hoards, committees,
councils, clubs and teams who helped the 291
groups function within our framework to achieve
their stated goals. The primary work of the
YMCA is not dollars. It is and always will he
people.

We Need A NEW YMCA BUILDING IN STAMFORD
The Young Men's Christian Association, first and largest youth agency with
a building in our city, has served Stamford since 1868- just over a ce ntury. The present Italian-style building was one of the finest YMCAs in the
United States when it was built 60 years ago.
Millions of pairs of feet have since helped wear out this once handsome
structure. Built to serve one-fourth the current membership of over 4,000, it
is not only bursting at the seams, but has become a maintenance nightmare.
Present brick building at 369 Atlantic Street, built
in 1908.
So it's just as well that Urban Redevelopment will tear it down and turn
the property into a parking lot for St. John's Towers moderate-income
apartments.
In 1908 the people of Stamford contributed generously to build the presen t
YMCA. Again the time has come for Stamford to provide, with the same
vision and generosity, a new YMCA for today's youth, as well as for youth
of the future .
A careful study indicates that a campaign goal of $2,500,000 is required as
From the rear it looks like a tenement.
the first step in providing the facilities necessary.
Site of New YMCA Building
This "aerial" view of a model of the proposed YMCA
building on the northeast corner of South and Bell
Streets shows its location in reference to stores along
Main and Atlantic Streets and (top right) the Old
Town Hall. The elongated structure attached to the
rear of the latticelike Y building is a convenient
municipal garage, part of the urban redevelopment
program .
The YMCA Will Stay Downtown Because:
Half of the youth membership of Stamford's largest youth-serving organization with a
building comes from south of Bull's Head .
Inner city boys and girls who especially need its character-building and athletic programs
can continue to walk to the new location . More than 300 such youngsters are on full or
partial Y scholarships.
-
Business men with tight schedules can reach the building quickly for physical fitness
programs.
The new site will be convenient for retired men1 as well as for young men who make
their home away from home in the Y residence.
Close to buses 1 trains and parking, the building will form an integral part of the new
and revitalized heart of Stamford.
Residence Rooms
A neat, cheerful room means a lot to a young man, especially if he's on his
own for the first time and working in a iob away from home. The residence
rooms in the new Y building will resemble the photo on the left. A mortgage
will cover virtually all the initial cost of these rooms, and rents will eventu~
a Ily pay off the mortgage.
Lobby
When you step through the front door
of any building, even a private home,
first impressions are important. The
cheerfu I, attractive new YMCA lobby
will say without words, "Welcome.
Come on in and ioin us. This is a
healthy, happy, friendly place."

Adult
Lounge
Swim, gym and other kinds of exercise form a big part of the YMCA - but
not all. It's a place to relax, too. Th is typical new lounge invites residents
and members to gather and meet their friends, watch TV, sit and read, write
letters and feel iust plain comfortable.
You Don't Have
To Be A Boy
To enjoy some· of the 152 group activities
at the YMCA. Pictures on this page highlight the multi-faceted adult program,
with accent on physical fitness. Top far
left, mature men jog around the indoor
track in the popular aerobics heartstrengthening course, and near left, a
bicycler keeps in shape by going nowhere fast. Seated at a table, bottom
left, are some of the 241 men in supervisory capacities who represent 18 Stam ford industries in the YMCA Industrial
Management Club. A business man, bottom center, strengthens his muscles with
a bar bell. Adults and teens in the scuba
diving class, below, learn to breathe
from a compressed air tank. Scuba is
open to girls and women too, but this
year none as yet have enrolled in this
class of 18, largest since the underwater
sport went on the YMCA program more
than a decade ago.
Adults In Action
Youth In Action
There's Never a Dull Moment
For the some 2,400 youthful members of the Stamford
YMCA. The Wheels, right, a group of inner city teenagers
in a training course to qualify as paid athletic and recreation leaders of somewhat younger inner city groups, gef
ready for a bus trip to Washington, D. C. The Wheels
program (stands for Work, Health, Education, Enrichment,
Leadership and Service) is financed jointly by the State
Department of Community Affairs (through the local CTE),
the Stamford YMCA and the Stamford United Fund. In
the top right photo, a big and little Indian Guide hold a
pow-wow. The first Stamford "tribe" of Indian Guides
was formed in October last year to build closer bonds
between boys and their dads. Other pictures illustrate
body-building physical and fun activities for boys in the
pool, gym and summer day camp.
Proposed Site of
North Stamford Branch
Your contribution to the YMCA Capital Fund Campaign will not
only help construct a new building downtown, but will also
help purchase a beautiful and adequate site in North Stamford
similar to the inviting scene on the left. The property will be a
summer day camp, perhaps this year, and also will be the
future site of the YMCA's North Stamford Branch, serving the
50% of the youth membership living north of Bull's Head.
Camp Rippowam on Lake Zoar
Boys who spend two or more weeks at the Y's 34-acre Camp
Rippowam in summer come back not only vigorous and healthy,
but with a great many new skills and self-confidence that comes
from outdoor living .
Here some campers are learning how to handle canoes, outboards and rowboats on Connecticut's Lake Zoar. Last year 165
different boys attended this camp located 40 miles from Stamford . Campaign Funds will help renovate some of the buildings
and add new facilities for expanded services.
How The YMCA Works With Youth
Young people can have a future that is fine, clean and purposeful:
IF they learn to live honestly and fairly with one anotherIF they see for themselves that Christian principles can be made to work in daily life, regardless of personal
religious belief IF they can receive realistic answers to their questions IF they can use their energies constructively IF their capacity for loyalty can be directed toward wholesome causes.
The new Stamford YMCA building will help bring these experiences into the lives of many more boys and girls
in Stamford.
A larger and better-equipped YMCA can develop more leaders with a strong sense of personal responsibility,
self-reliance and spiritual values.
Large Inspirational Gifts Are Needed
This appeal differs from an annual request. It differs from all other campaigns. This is a capital need which justifies giving from both current
income and accrued capital.
We do not suggest any specific unit of giving but are certain you will
consider contributing your full potential toward a cause as worthy as this.
The YMCA Campaign encourages commitments over a 36-month period
(or more if desired) which can be paid on a monthly, quarterly or semiannual basis.
Once-in-a-generation to provide the tools that will
be of tremendous service to present and future members of our community
for many years to come.
AN OPPORTUNITY -
Advantages of Giving Appreciated Securities
Federal tax laws encourage generous giving to programs such as the YMCA
Capital Fund. Pledges may be paid in money, securities, or property.
Gifts are tax deductible and qualify for the 30% limit.
There are real advantages in paying (many people elect to pay) pledges in
securities or real property because:
l. Direct transfer of such property to YMCA Capital Funds saves the capital
gains tax.
2. The YMCA gets full market value from sale of securities or real estate.
3. You take a charitable gift tax deduction for full market value of securities or real estate.
4. You get c;redit for a generous gift at a cost of only your original purchase
price, less your tax deduction.
_memorials
The influence of a name- a name which stands for honor, integrity and community service - will be an inspiration to future generations by encouraging the preservation of these very same ideals. Families, organizations
and industries are encouraged to set up memorials in the YMCA by providing funds to build specific features
of the new building.
Each gift will be honored by the YMCA Board of Directors with a dignified· plaque inscribed according to the
donor's wish and placed in a suitable spot.
Unlike a memorial statue in a park, which iust stands there doing nothing, a YMCA memorial gift provides the
means for trained leaders to help generations of youngsters learn to lead healthy, happy, responsible lives.
