ANNUAL REPORT
1972-73
THE SUBJECT
WAS WOMEN ....
... AND THEIR FAMILIES
CHILD CARE
Recpgnizing the need for increased
child care services, the YWCA added
two new programs. In Darien the
branch Child Care Center served 150
different families in its half-day
operation. Stamford's All-Day Preschool had 32 youngsters who enjoyed
a unique program that included swim
and gym. The Sittin' Service continued to meet the needs of mothers
who wanted a morning to themselves
to take a class, shop, or attend a
meeting.
THE YW RESIDENCE
Young working women 18-35 . continued
to find residential living at the
YW a good way to embark on their independent life styles. Parties, companionship, an understanding Residence
Director, and reasonable rent added up
to a bargain for 70 girls.
COLLEGE TRIP FOR BIG SISTERS
Once again the highlight of the Big
Sisters, a group for inner-city
black teen-age girls, was a visit to
two colleges in Virginia. Living in
dorms and attending classes for four
days, the girls got the feel of college life and new motivation to pursue their education. Part of the
trip money was raised by the twenty
girls at their program "Reflections
of the Third World."
ADVENTURE IN
A DCA funded program for 40 first,
second, third and fourth graders,
used Black History, crafts, drama
and games to help them improve their
reading and verbal skills. Highlights of the '73 summer were a trip
to the Bronx Zoo and an Open House
for parents at which they presented
a play and a water show.
WOMEN'S GROUPS
The old-time spirit of friendship and
the warm welcome for the new family
in ' the neighborhood, are alive and
flourishing in sophisticated communities like Darien and Stamford. The
two YWCA Newcomer Clubs in these towns
served a total of 555 women, not to
mention husbands and children who
joined the many activities. These
clubs, along with their follow-up
groups, Stamford and Darien Suburbanites, contributed leadership and
money to both YWCA and community.
SATURDAY FREE SCHOOL
Saturday Free School provided a program of arts and crafts, swim , dance
and tutoring for 80 grade school
children.
COMMUNITY LUNCHEONS
Co1Im1unity Luncheons attracted many to
monthly progr ams f ocusing on loca l,
state and national issues . Senator
Ribicof f led the Fa ll series with a
talk on We lfare Reform; he visited
our All-Day Pr e-Schoo l while here .
OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED BY TH E

DARIEN BRANCH WOMEN'S SERIES
This exciting program for women cosponsored by the Darien Branch end
Planned Parenthood, called "Women,
Our Bodies Our Selves" dealt with
everything from anatomy, and physiology, to contraceptives, menopause
and aging. The large Darien branch
living room was filled by women of
all ages and backgrounds and attendance reached 80.
CAREER COUNSELING
Last year, the YW's Career Counseling
Service, offered in cooperation with
the University of Bridgeport, helped
150 women from the Stamford area take
stock of their employment potential.
Tests and professional guidance helped
them determine their educational and
training needs.
FOCUS ON WOMEN
"Issues and Answers" buffets, a series
of luncheon meetings featuring speakers .o n women's issues, proved highly
popular. A discussion on the Equal
Rights Amendment was the highlight of
the informal meetings.
The YWCA Board adopted a strong stand
in support of the ratification in
Connecticut of the ERA, which was communicated to the legislators. After
its passage, the board followed up with
a letter to the governor urging establishment of a Connnission on the Status
of Women, which has ~een implemented.
"SALUTE TO WOMEN"
Our "Salute to Women" highlighted
Stamford's YWCA Week. Gloria Schaffer,
Secretary of State for Connecticut,
saluted 165 outstanding Stamford women
at the reception April 23. The salute
continued the next day with a festival
of exhibits, films, slides and demonstrations focusing on concerns relating to women.
