Henry Akerly
Reference:
1:71
Colonial families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut, by Herbert
F. Seversmith, 4 v . (1939 - 53) .
(at NYPL)
Henry Akerly of New Haven and Stamford in the Connecticut Colony .
Several writers have identified Robert Akerly of Southold and Brookhaven on Long
Island as a son or other relative of Henry Akerly , who appears early as a resident
of New Haven and Stamford in the Connecticut Colony . There is no evidence yet found
which supports any such relationship .
Henry Akerly appears in the ~ ~ Colony Records, as edited by Atwater, in April
1640 . He was at that time rebuked for building a cellar and selling it without leave;
he was a house carpenter and farmer . On 7 Dec . 1641 he is No. 36 on a list of pioneers at Stamford, and was granted land. Rev . Huntington mentions him in his History
of Stamford, Connecticut, at pp . 20 , 25 , 27, 42 , 54, 59, 82 and 155 . His widow Ann
was said to have been 75 years of age in 1662 , or born in 1587 . Henry Akerly also
appears in Greenwich , Conn. , 16 Oct . 1656 . [He was a signer of the document submit ting Greenwich to the New Haven Colony - RWC]
In the American Genealogist (10 : 112) appears an abstract of the wi 11 of Henry " Accorly",
17 June 1658, signed with his mark . His wife is to be executrix; his grandchild , under
age, son of Vinson (Vincent) Simpkins , is mentioned , and " my heir An Accorly" ; Mary
( )ason, now living with him, "wch I tooke as my owneu, under 19, witnesses were
ffrances Homes , William Oliver, Rich : Homes , ffrances Brown.
The references to " An Accorly" is ambiguous . It is not yet determined whether he means
his wife , a descendant Anne Akerly, or some other relative . If Robert Akerly were his
son it is peculiar that he was not mentioned. The complete dissassociation of the two
families as well as lack of evidence , renders the probability of close relationship
very small, although it is reasonable to assume that ultimately they derived from the
same family .
The descent from Henry Akerly is traced from his grandchildren, the children of Vincent
Simpkins .
These removed to New Jersey , where there were numerous descendants .
[This means we have no male line of descent from Henry Akerly - RWC]
