EVENT DATE:

MEDIA ADVISORY

DEDICATION SET:
LIBRARY BUS IS VEHICLE FOR NEW LIBRARY/SCHOOL INITIATIVE
(STAMFORD, CT) -- On Monday, January 13, 1997, at noon, The
Ferguson Library will dedicate its new bus which will facilitate a
library/school cross-education initiative. The program's goal is to
instill at an early age an appreciation for libraries as an educational
resource. The bus is a gift to the Library from the Friends of Ferguson
Library.
The bus will transport students from elementary grades in
Stamford public schools to the Library. The students will be given an
orientation to library services such as reference materials and
electronic resources which can assist them in homework preparation.
Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy, School Superintendent Michael
Nast and ' other school officials are expected to be on hand for the
noontime dedication which will take place outside the Library on the
Bedford Street side.

Bus carries More Than Passengers -It carries a Library Message
The bus itself is smaller than a municipal vehicle. It measures 29
feet long by 8 feet wide. It is more than 10 feet high and holds 27
passengers. Four video units will keep students entertained en route
to and from the Library.
The bus design was created by a local design firm, Bronz and
Esposito, of Bank Street in Stamford. It graphically depicts the
Library's theme, 'The Ferguson Library -- Your Connection to the
World" through use of the distinctive Library facade, a computer
screen and shelves of books inside the screen. It's a theme which was
introduced in the Library's annual report this past fall and which has
carried through to banners, buttons, brochures and bookcovers.
Bus Was Designed Using the Waning Art of Airbrushing
Airbrush artist Dale Henry of New Orleans, Louisiana, who was
highly recommended by members of the transportation industry,
traveled to Connecticut where he spent two weeks airbrushing the
design onto the bus by what many in the industry see as a waning
artform. With the hectic pace of transit companies, most say they
cannot afford 7 to 12 days of labor-intensive airbrushing and choose
instead to go with a 2- to 3-day process of wrapping. "The Library
could afford the extra time and wanted the bus design to be just right.
We want to send a message of what we're about and we intend to keep
the bus for a long time, so airbrushing was the perfect choice for us,"
said the Library's Public Relations Supervisor, Lois A. Fusco.
"Airbrushing also fit the Library's style better because it's a more
traditional artform than wrapping and the Library is a place of
traditional values," Fusco said.

Bus Is Gift from Library Friends
The bus prominently displays the words "Gift from Friends of
Ferguson [Library]" in bright yellow. The Friends is an organization of
Stamford citizens who are concerned about the well-being of the
Library and who, through the years, have supported programs and
provided special gifts such as a book van, leather reading chairs,
computers, and most recently, the bus.
"The Friends have been very generous in supporting the Library.
The group plays an integral role in Library operations, providing not
only for special needs such as the bus, but also helping to fund key
Library programs like the popular Book and Author Luncheon which is
held every spring and the Summer Reading Club for children and
adults," said Library President Ernest A. DiMattia, Jr. He went on to
say, "This [library Ischool initiative] is a program which could not have
happened were it not for the Friends' support."
Book Nook Will Also Be Dedicated
An added highlight of the day will be the dedication of the
recently created Book Nook in the Friends Book Store which is
located on the first floor of the Main Library in downtown Stamford.
Friends Board members will be on hand for the Book Nook dedication,
which will take place one-half hour prior to the bus dedication.
The purpose of the Book Nook is twofold, according to
Membership Chair Gilda Axiotakis: to generate awareness of the
Friends of Ferguson Library and to provide a quiet place for readers
and Book Store supporters.
